Fellow Scouters,

The following "Unit" Guidelines were developed by Troop 334 as their internal process for assisting Life Scouts through their service project requirements for Eagle Scout. This process is an implementation of the South Florida Council Life to Eagle Guidelines and I heartily recommend it to other units as an excellent starting point for guiding Life Scouts through the Eagle Service Project requirement.

PRIOR TO BEGINNING

1. Obtain rank of Life Scout. Be active in the Troop.

2. Be able to complete project before your 18th birthday.

3. Carefully read Life To Eagle Guidelines.

a. Project must provide significant effort (one that is extra ordinary for the candidate), with a measurable goal or a defined objective, that is thoughtfully planned and developed, provides an adequate Opportunity to give leadership to others, and is to be performed for a qualified beneficiary. Routine labor or a service normally rendered is not an accepted standard of performance for your Eagle service project.

b. The number of volunteers and the amount of time spent on the project must be sufficient for you to clearly demonstrated your ability to "...plan, develop and give leadership to others...."

IDEA PHASE

_____ Obtain and thoroughly read Life To Eagle Guidelines.

_____ Place Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook from the Life to Eagle Guidelines book into a three-ring binder. Workbook should be kept organized, attractive, neat and legible. All required paper work shall be submitted in the Eagle Project Workbook binder.

_____ Conceptualize your idea, qualify its need, define measurable goals and objectives, and identify who is the beneficiary.

_____ Discuss your idea with the beneficiary. Tell them your idea and tell them that if they think it is a good idea that you will write it up and submit it for approval. Have them sign the Plan Worksheet, page 17, of your Eagle Project Workbook.

_____Discuss the idea with your Scoutmaster and present it to the Troop Committee to get their input and approval to Continue.

PLAN PHASE

_____ Complete PLAN, pages 1-2, and PLAN, page 17, in your Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook.

_____ Contact Troop Committee Chairperson or Scoutmaster to arrange to present your project at next Troop Committee meeting.

_____ Give verbal presentation and submit your EagleScoutService Project Workbook with completed PLAN and signed worksheet (signed by beneficiary) to Troop Committee.Once approved, Scoutmaster will complete your PLAN worksheet and you may proceed to DEVELOP phase.

DEVELOP PHASE

_____ Read page 3 of Workbook. Develop detailed plan reflecting the efforts, methods and resources needed to achieve its goals and objectives. Refer to Life to Eagle Guidelines-DEVELOP. You must be able to provide leadership to others, i.e. committee meetings, etc.. You cannot do the work on your own.

REMEMBER: The project will only be approved to proceed to the CARRY OUT phase if it is a significant effort, with a measurable goal and a defined objective, that requires thoughtful planning and development, provides an Eagle candidate with an adequate opportunity to provide leadership to others, and is undertaken for a qualified beneficiary.

_____ Complete pages 4-8 of Eagle Project Workbook. Review your completed Eagle service project plan with the authorizing official of the project beneficiary and your Scoutmaster. Make any necessary adjustments and organize and prepare your Workbook in a form ready to present to the Troop committee and then submit to District Advancement Chairman.

_____ Contact Troop Committee Chairperson or Scoutmaster to arrange to present you project at the next Troop Committee meeting.

_____ Give verbal presentation and submit your Eagle ScoutServiceProject Workbook with completed DEVELOP to the Troop Committee.

Once approved by Scoutmaster and Troop Committee, Scoutmaster and Troop Committee Chairperson will sign page 17 of DEVELOP Worksheet.

_____ Eagle Project Workbook is then submitted to the District Advancement Chairperson. Once signed and returned, you may proceed to the CARRY OUT phase.

CARRY OUT PHASE

_____ Read page 9 of Workbook. Carry out project. In this final phase of your Eagle service project, you are expected to acquire and manage the materials and supplies needed, and to recruit, train and supervise the volunteers needed, to achieve the measurable goals and objectives defined in the detailed plan you developed. Refer to Life to Eagle Guidelines- CARRY OUT.

_____ Complete pages 10-16 of your Eagle Project Workbook and complete page 18, CARRY OUT worksheet.

_____ Sign page 18, Eagle Candidate Certification, in Eagle Project Workbook.

_____ Submit the completed workbook, along with the Eagle Scout Award Application and the other necessary documents, needed to conduct an ‘Eagle Board of Review, to the District Advancement Committee Chairman or designee.

Steps must be followed in order. It is your responsibility to insure that you have adequate time to comply with each step prior to your 18th birth day. If your project is not planned with sufficient time to be completed in time, does it demonstrate the leadership skills expected of an Eagle Scout?
